Psalm 96 is a Call to Act

Thousands of years after it was written, Psalm 96 continues to call. It is a call issued to all of creation, stretching across centuries, echoing throughout the earth. Even today, it lifts our eyes and focuses our attention on the God who has blessed us with another day. The Lord’s day. Psalm 96 is a call to act.

Sing to the LORD.

Bless his name.

Tell of his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations.

Share his marvelous works among all the peoples.

Forsake all worthless idols and fearfully praise the maker of the heavens.

Behold his splendor, majesty, and beauty.

Ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

Bring an offering.

Worship him in the splendor of holiness.

Tremble before him, all the earth.

Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!”

Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice. Let the sea roar, and all that fills it. Let the field exult, and everything in it!

Sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Psalm 96 is a call to act. Bless. Tell. Declare. Share. Forsake. Behold. Ascribe. Bring. Worship. Tremble. Say. Rejoice. Exult. Sing. Do you hear that ancient call echoing across the centuries? Will you answer that call, allowing it to put things in their proper perspective? We are not the main characters of the world’s greatest story. Today is not all about us. Life is so much bigger than the mere trivialities that so easily distract us. And yet, we have been invited to participate—together—in the very reason for our being.

Sing to the LORD.

Bless his name.

Tell of his salvation.

Declare his glory, for great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised.

Psalm 96 is calling us to act. It is the Lord’s day. May we answer his timeless call with thirsty souls and thankful hearts.
