Known to Everyone … For What?

Today’s Bible reading is Judges 8 and Philippians 4.

Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand. (Phil 4:5)

Reasonableness. Someone who is “reasonable” can be reasoned with. They recognize and are willing to adapt to a standard outside themselves. The reasonable person isn’t extreme or excessive. He is steady. She is fair. Quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. Calm. Composed. In control. Gentle, which is why the New American Standard translates Philippians 4:5 as “Let your gentle spirit be known to all men.”

The reasonable person thinks before she speaks. He considers before he comments. She is discreet in what she shares. He is careful with his tone. She is willing to overlook a slight. He is mature enough to suffer wrong without returning wrong. In times of difficulty or chaos, reasonable people are looked to and depended upon for their sound judgment. Why? A reputation of stability has been formed, one interaction and impression after another.

Let your reasonableness be known to everyone…

It’s never been easier (for good or ill) to make an impression on people. Spend time interacting on social media and some will believe they have come to “know” you. They may never actually meet you in the flesh, but an impression of you has already been made.

Which leads us to the question: For what am I known? Online? In the workplace? Among the congregation? At home?

Rash words? A quick temper? Pouting? Careless sharing? Gossip? Lying? Complaining? Discontentment? Rivalry? Provocation? Bitterness? Hatred? Prejudice? Abuse? Fits of anger? Recklessness? Retaliation? Escalation?

We don’t have to wonder what disciples of Jesus are expected to be known for. By the Lord. Who is at hand.

Let your reasonableness be known to everyone…

But here’s the tricky thing: in order to be known for our reasonableness, we have to act reasonably. If we are to build the reputation of being gentle, we have to actually live and interact with gentle spirits.

So what do you want to be known by everyone for? Interactions and impressions will be made today. Build wisely.
